Iberia Airlines and American Express announced today the signing of a strategic agreement which includes an association between both companies´ client loyalty programs, adding Iberia´s frequent flyer program, Iberia Plus, to the Membership Rewards program American Express offers its cardmembers, enabling them to redeem their points for free Iberia flights.

From Septermber 17 onwards, American Express cardmembers, belonging to the Membership Rewards program in Spain, will be able to transfer their accumulated points to the Iberia Plus program, increasing the American Express brand´s value proposition as well as ensuring customer loyalty.

This agreement only benefits the American Express Membership Rewards program and Iberia Plus members in Spain, but also has a global dimension, progressively including countries where American Express and Iberia have a significant presence, such as the USA, Mexico, Argentine, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Austria and Finland. American Express cardmembers in these countries will be able to accumulate their points together with the ones obtained through Iberia Plus, and enjoy all the added advantages of this program, which will enable them to get free air tickets to travel to more than a hundred Iberia destinations, as well as to many others offered by other associated airlines, adding up more than 700 hundred destinations all over the world. They will also be able to exchange their points for stays at the best hotel chains, car rental, and other services.

Currently, the award winning American Express Membership Rewards program has more than 15 million members all over the world, and Iberia Plus has more than 3 millions. Both programs are widely accepted among Spanish consumers since the beginnings of the Iberia Plus program 16 years ago, and the American Express Membership Rewards programme in Spain, 15 years ago.

The Spanish card industry market has already reached a competitive and mature level, making customer loyalty programs of great added value for cardmembers, who want to be rewarded for spending, through offers of free flights and other services in leading airlines, such as Iberia. These programmes become a key differentiating tool to secure client loyalty and to establish a long term relationship with mutual benefit.

American Express and Iberia identified the similar needs and expectations an important segment of their clients, the frequent flyers, and therefore decided to join forces to offer them one of the most complete value propositions available in the market.

According to Jorge Gil, Amex Spain President, this strategic agreement with Iberia, one of the leading airlines worldwide, is a milestone in our strategy of alliances that allow us to offer outstanding products and services to our Spanish and international clients. Joining forces and creating synergies with Iberia, both business and leisure travellers will benefit from our innovative products, supported by a first class service everywhere and at any time.

According to Felix García Viejobueno, Client Service Manager at Iberia, the association of two leaders in loyalty programs in Spain and worldwide, adds immediate value and opens the horizon to further strategic collaboration, not only in Spain, but in different countries relevant for both companies. A wide majority of American Express holders are also Iberia clients, so that this agreement will allow them to access that extra service they are expecting.
